Lautremonde University doesn’t educate students. It produces Evil Overlords. While his classmates master curses and schemes, sophomore Zeph Zelaznik can barely summon malevolence on command. He’s too nice for a school where the magisters design tests to weed out the weak, pitting students against each other in a meritocracy of malice. Flunk out, and you’re condemned to obscurity—a mere minion in someone else’s dark fantasy. Desperate to survive, Zeph makes an alliance with two rivals: Nin Orichalcum, whose brilliance burns as hot as her djinn heritage, and Tris Abernathy, the golden boy whose ancestry guarantees his success. Together they venture into the City of Iron to barter for test answers—because at Lautremonde, honor is for heroes, and heroes are zeroes. Then they’re caught. The Headmaster’s decree: only Zeph or Nin may pass. Suddenly, Zeph must compete against the one person he’s come to care about. But Nin has vanished. Dreams plague Zeph’s sleep—visions of her trapped, calling for help. As he searches for her, he uncovers Lautremonde’s terrible secret: the University isn’t preparing Evil Overlords for the fictional worlds of Ultratext. It’s feeding them into something far worse. At Lautremonde, the motto is Non Serviam: “I will not serve.” Zeph is about to learn what that truly means.
