Beneath the Ashen Throne

Beneath the Ashen Throne

"Beneath the Ashen Throne" Kang Do-hyun was born into wealth he never chose and comfort that never taught him to want anything. His life is complete on the surface and hollow underneath — until a game with no developer, no release date, and no explanation forces him to confront a question no one has ever asked him: What remains of you when everything that can be bought is taken away? The game is unlike anything he has played. His nameless character walks through a narrow corridor of black stone. At the end waits an entity — something that looks like a man, dragging a heavy chain. Do-hyun dies again and again. Forty-one times over eight hours. He discovers the entity learns from him, adapts to him, reads him while he reads it. He notices thousands of names carved into the corridor walls — names of those who came before. He asks himself, quietly and unwillingly: Am I here too? When he finally breaks, the screen goes black. Then, slowly, as if written by a finger on cold fogged glass: Cowardice acknowledged. The ground vanishes beneath his feet. He wakes in Velmora — not in the body he owned, but in one that was worked. Rough hands. Calloused skin. The body of a man who carried weight for a living. His first job in this world is hauling corpses on a wooden cart to the furnaces on the third floor. Velmora is a city that runs not on power or money, but on names. Here, your name is not just your identity — it is your claim, your anchor, and your weapon. Lose it, and you become a file in the city's archive. Hold it the wrong way for too long, and you become part of the machine. He meets Byeon, another worker, who tells him without ceremony: "Those who stay here long forget their names." As they walk the corridors of Velmora, Do-hyun realizes he has seen this place before. The same black stone. The same narrow passage. The same darkness at the far end — and somewhere inside it, the sound of a chain being dragged. The game was not a game. It was a door. Do-hyun discovers he can see what no one else can — hidden routes, forbidden names, layers of the system that even those born in Velmora cannot read. He carries a blade that severs names instead of flesh. He follows the trail of a name that should not exist — Cairn — a person who refused to be erased until they became something between a memory and a marker. A cairn in the truest sense: a pile of stones above a grave, saying something was here and was not forgotten. Velmora does not ask whether you are strong. It asks whether you can remain yourself while the world tries to redefine you. Beneath the Ashen Throne is a dark psychological fantasy about identity, survival, and the cost of being seen in a city that treats names as currency, souls as filing problems, and cowardice as the first step toward something worse.
