by Carl Yungy
Maro Solis, a down-on-his-luck freighter pilot living in the decaying orbit of Ceres Station, is spiraling toward financial ruin. Clinging to his forty-three-year-old ship, the Antero, Maro is burdened by mounting debt to the mysterious and predatory "Kessler Finance." With a deadline for the surrender of his ship looming, Maro is desperate to find a way to maintain his independence and keep his future with his young daughter, Lena, alive. Against the warnings of his optimistic mechanic, Tomas, Maro accepts a high-risk, off-the-books delivery job offered by Kessler. The job promises to clear his debt and provide a path forward: transport a single, sealed cargo container from Ceres to a derelict mining platform near Titan. Told the cargo is "medical equipment," Maro attempts to ignore the obvious signs of a black-market deal. However, once he reaches the delivery point, the truth is exposed. The cargo is SEVER—a brutal, banned neurological weapon designed to permanently strip human beings of their ability to process social empathy. Having realized he has been complicit in moving a tool of mass compliance for Hextall Defense Systems, Maro is pulled into a dangerous game. He is contacted by Yael Ostrander, an intelligence officer for the Belt Collective, who reveals that Maro is the latest in a line of doomed couriers and that his own life and ship are now targets. As Hextall’s security forces close in to cover their tracks, Maro is forced to confront the truth about his own life: he has spent years in constant motion, using his career as a shield to avoid the vulnerability of truly being present for the people he loves. Caught, impounded, and placed in a sensory-deprivation cell, Maro faces his own "dark night of the soul." In the silence, he finally stops running, realizing that his salvation won't be found in a job, a payday, or a flight path, but in the decision to finally "stay" and take responsibility for the weight he has been carrying.
