Below Measurable

Below Measurable

The panel gave him four hours to choose. He ignored it for three hours and fifty-nine minutes. Ren is not brave. He is not special. He is seventeen years old and he lives in the south slum of a tier four city where the roads are crooked, the lights die during storms, and the rich districts throw their garbage downhill because there is nobody below them strong enough to throw it back. He guards merchant goods for bronze coins that barely cover rent. He haggles over apples because fruit is a luxury now. He wears armor with burn marks across the chest and carries a knife meant for peeling fruit, and he has eyes that people describe, when they bother to describe him at all, as empty. Not cold. Not threatening. Empty. Like looking at someone who has already calculated every way a situation ends and found none of them worth fearing. His sister Lisa is three days from an academy entrance exam. He has been saving for months. Borrowing from people you do not want to owe favors to. Counting coins on a cold floor after she falls asleep. She is the only reason the math of his life has ever added up to something worth protecting. Then the panel arrived. It did not explain itself. It simply appeared with a countdown and a yes and a no and a third option underneath both of them that read like a warning written by something that had never needed to warn anyone before. [ Failing to choose: ??? ] He chose nothing. The timer ran out. Something bound itself to him anyway. What came after was not generous. No welcome. No power handed over cleanly. Just three visible stats, a rank that read *Below Measurable* as though the system had looked at him and decided he was not worth measuring yet, and every other number locked behind walls that would not open. And at the very bottom, below everything else, in the same flat mechanical text as the rest.... “We have been waiting.” He does not know what that means. He has more immediate problems. A man with a scar running from his ear to his jaw just opened his door in the rain. There is something in his hand. The lightning is already fading and the darkness is coming back fast. This is not a story about a chosen one. There is no destiny announced. No gift given cleanly. Just a young man in a broken city standing between his sleeping sister and a door that should have stayed closed, holding a fruit knife, with something ancient and patient newly attached to him and a rank the entire world would laugh at if it bothered to look. The world is not looking. That is its first mistake.
