Outbound

Tuj and the crew of the Astreus were meant to build it, test it, and hand it off. A stepping stone. A proof of concept. The kind of mission that ends quietly, with a ride back to Earth and a line on a résumé. But when political maneuvering and budget cuts derail the planned Saturn expedition, the Astreus becomes something else entirely. With the prime crew grounded and no time to train replacements, the decision falls to the people already aboard. Stay, and become the first humans to travel beyond the inner solar system in a single mission—or leave, and watch years of work be repurposed for something smaller, safer, and closer to home. Some choose Earth. The rest choose Saturn. As the ship begins its slow, relentless ion burn away from Earth, the reality of that choice settles in. There’s no dramatic launch. No roar of engines. Just a quiet acceleration that will carry them farther from home than any human has ever gone. Years from now, they’ll reach their destination—if everything goes right. It won’t. Because deep space isn’t just empty. And the farther they travel, the more the mission begins to change—testing not just their systems, but their trust in each other, their purpose, and the reason they were sent at all. For Tuj, what started as the opportunity of a lifetime becomes something far more uncertain. Out there, distance changes everything
