Wu Lei is a young criminal investigator in Shanghai. During the day, he catches thieves, tracks scammers, and follows evidence like any other police officer. At night, he deals with the things that hide behind old rules. His first case begins with an impossible disappearance. An eighty-four-year-old woman opens her apartment door at 2:17 a.m. and walks out into an empty corridor. The camera shows no one outside. But the audio records gongs, drums, and a strange folk chant: "The phoenix is here. The qilin is here. People inside, answer once." In old Yangpu, there is a rule: festival phoenix songs may be heard, but a phoenix singing at midnight must never be answered. Wu Lei does not believe in rules that cannot leave evidence. Then the next elderly woman answers.
