The Scrap

The Scrap

by HadimasForth

Post ApocalypticRuling ClassPsychologicalSteampunkSci-fi

In the year 12 of the Great Decoupling, the sky did not fall. The Moguls simply decided it was no longer worth the bandwidth to manage. They called it ‘Optimization.’ We called it ‘Apathy.’ They moved behind their graphene walls, into a world where reality was curated and truth was shadows on a screen. They left us the Scrap. They left us the old stone cathedrals, the rusted water pipes, and the seed tins that had been hidden in the soil for a generation. They thought they had left us to rot. They thought that without their ‘Feed,’ we would devour each other in the dark. But they forgot that the dark is where the seed germinates. They forgot that when the signal is jammed, a human being becomes a transmitter. This is not a story about a war. A war implies two equal sides. This is a story about a decoupling. The Pigs left the farmhouse. And for the first time in history, the horses didn’t look for a new master. We built a Raft. We built it from the trash they left behind, and we launched it onto the grey silt. This is how the Whisper travelled. This is how the Shore was found. And this is why, if you are holding this book, you are already a variable that their algorithms cannot solve.
