In the sealed city of Veyr, every spell, repair, memory, injury, and miracle must balance against the public Ledger. Nothing changes unless the Difference is paid. Niall Venn is seventeen, officially talentless, and one failed audit away from losing the only wage keeping his mother alive in Null Ward. He cannot perform impressive Reckonings like the heirs and guild apprentices around him. What he can do is worse: he can see the tiny unpaid Remainders trained practitioners miss, the hidden costs trying to crawl into weak accounts. When Niall interrupts a simple repair to stop an impossible debt from attaching to his name, the Hall of Measures marks him as a failure. That same night, he sees the same silver-black Remainder moving through hospital notices toward his mother. The Concord says the Ledger is neutral. Niall is about to learn that the law may be neutral, but access to valid accounts is political, and the city's miracles have been paid for by people too poor to be counted.
