Alba, 949 AD. Something ancient has retreated to the edges of the world. Sorcha is Winter Court fae — old enough to have watched civilizations rise and bore her into the ground, powerful enough to move through the dark unseen, and angry enough to have walked away from everything she was owed without looking back. She builds a cottage in a forest so old the light gives up before it reaches the ground, and she tells herself she is biding, not hiding. There is a considerable difference. She is also looking for something. A child. Hers, by blood and by the particular pull that lives below thought in the older parts of whatever she is made of. She followed that pull to this ground. The ground gave her a standing stone and a great deal of unanswered questions instead. What follows is her record of the first year — the woman who arrives fleeing Malcolm's men on Imbolc eve, the Norse shield maiden pulled in by a working gone sideways, the small fae creature with opinions about birds and no interest in permission. The stone beneath the dark water. The veil around the cottage. The search that has barely begun. The Dark Mile Journals is a prequel series told entirely in Sorcha's voice — dry, ancient, devastating, and occasionally surprised by how much she has accumulated for someone who only intended to bide. She is still looking.
