In the years of the great war between Athens and Sparta, there were victories that altered the course of history and losses that were recorded in the language of numbers. Ships destroyed, cities taken, men counted and recounted until they became abstractions. There were other losses that left no record. This is the story of two lives carried through that world. One begins in a city under siege, where a child is taught how to remember light in a place that has begun to forget it. The other is formed within a system that demands clarity, discipline, and the careful removal of anything that does not serve a purpose. The ordinary machinery of war places them within the same household. What develops between them does not belong to the language available to them. It is not named, not defined, not permitted the clarity that would allow it to be understood while it is happening. It exists instead in small moments: in silence shared without discomfort, in attention given without instruction, in the gradual recognition of another presence as something that alters the shape of the world. It deepens without declaration. It becomes necessary without acknowledgment. It settles into a place that neither of them has been taught how to navigate. The Greeks tell stories about what lies beyond life. Of fields where no shadow falls, where what has been carried is finally set down, where those who have been separated are made whole again. These stories are told to the young with care, not because they are believed without question, but because they offer a way of holding what cannot otherwise be held. This story carries one of those images with it, from its first page to its last. What forms between two people in a world that has no place for them is real, even when it cannot be spoken. What remains when that world asserts itself fully is the question this book asks. It does not answer it loudly.AUTHORS NOTE:This is an original novel inspired by Homeric tradition. I'm posting it here chapter-by-chapter to share the journey, so it's no longer trapped in my mind.
