Elias Vance wanted to be left alone, and he had earned it the hard way. He was twenty years a soldier, the kind a government pointed at a problem when they needed the problem to stop existing. The wars took two decades and they took his family, and when they were finally done with him he came home with almost nothing and built a quiet life around it. A cabin at the edge of nowhere. A bad hip that told the weather. An aging dog named Valka, who was the last living thing he had left in the world, and who understood him better than most people ever had. It was small, and it was his, and it was enough. He had exactly one rule left, and it had held for years: not my problem. Then something landed in the valley that decided it wanted everything. It did not come to conquer the world so much as to take it apart and ship it somewhere. Patient, organized, unbothered, hunting by heat and working through the living the way a mill works through grain. It burned the valley for three weeks before it ever reached his mountain. By the time it did, there was a bunker dug deep in the rock below, sixty-three strangers crowded into the dark, run by a woman who fought the apocalypse with a chalkboard and arithmetic and the flat refusal to ever lie to anyone. The first days are brutal. Fast, violent, simple. Survive the contact. Kill what's in front of you. They cost him things he can't get back. But the fighting always moves on, and what it leaves behind still has to eat, and drink, and sleep, and not be found. The bunker doesn't need the weapon Elias used to be. It needs someone who can be useful when the killing is over, and that turns out to be a far harder thing to become. Because killing what's trying to take them wasn't the hard part, keeping them alive was.
