The Circle has hunted the marked ones for a hundred years. Now they're inside the workhouse walls. London, 1904. Sixteen‑year‑old Lucy Parkens hasn't eaten in two days. She steals two loaves of bread – and gets caught. Dragged to the brutal St. Giles Workhouse, she finds grey wool, carbolic soap, and girls who vanish in the night. But Lucy has something the others don't: a crescent scar behind her ear. A mark her mother left behind. A mark the Circle wants. The men in top hats are already inside, checking every ear. Lucy has one chance: crawl through a pitch‑black coal chute and run. If she's caught, she'll never be seen again. What does the Circle want with the marked ones? And what will they do to Lucy if they find her first?
