The Last Good Country

In the years before the American Civil War, courier Elias Reed survives by staying unclaimed. He carries messages through a divided country, avoids causes he does not trust, and keeps enough distance from every side to remain alive. But when a delivery in Ohio ends in gunfire and draws him into the orbit of abolitionist firebrand John Brown, Elias is pushed onto the violent roads west, where slavery, vengeance, and conviction have already turned the land into a battlefield. As safehouses burn, names are sold, and armed men hunt both fugitives and ideals, Elias is forced into the company of people willing to kill for justice—and others willing to kill for anything at all. Set against the gathering storm of Bleeding Kansas and the coming collapse of the republic, The Last Good Country is a dark historical novel about moral ruin, political violence, and the thin line between courage and fanaticism Side note: this is one of the biggest projects I’ve worked on so far, and I’m genuinely excited to share it publicly; it actually began as a concept for RDR3.
