Jazz Brightwater is a conman, smuggler, thief and general chancer stuck on Little Spittlington, a frozen dump of a moon run by the corrupt lot known as The Directive. His life plan is simple. Make one big score, steal enough credits to get off this ice cube, and never come back. That plan goes badly wrong when he accidentally crashes into Kinsella Van Dar Hoorn, a young revolutionary from the Sombrero Liberation and Unification Troupe, who is trying to recover a mysterious artefact before The Directive can get their hands on it. Instead of getting rich, Jazz gets arrested, beaten, and dragged into a fight he wants absolutely nothing to do with. Forced into an uneasy partnership, the selfish rogue and the determined rebel must break out of prison, dodge guards, survive energy spiders, steal a luxury spaceship, and stay ahead of the deeply unpleasant Governor Heraclitus Chord. But the further they run, the clearer it becomes that the artefact is far more important than either of them realised. With The Directive closing in and chaos following them wherever they go, Jazz may have to decide if he is just a slippery little criminal, or someone capable of doing the right thing for once.
