Mal'ek has two choices: be a monster in a world that has collapsed, or be a man and build a new one. But first, he has to survive. Mal'ek had a simple job: deliver cargo across wastelands to Domain One and never ask questions. Things changed when the Ancestors set him on a new path as a catastrophic ice storm knocked him off course and into the buried ruins of his people. He did not expect ‌the human woman he was tasked with transporting to her masters to change the way he sees his world, and he certainly did not expect to care for her. This complicated things, given that she was now his medic. For now, what matters is getting his men out alive. Emeline Foster, an ex-nurse, never thought her own people would sell her to aliens. With no class and no name, she and four others are shipped across a post-apocalyptic wasteland in chains. But things go horribly wrong, and she finds herself with an offer from the system: take on the [MEDIC] class and help her captors, or accept her inevitable death.
