Cairo, 1550s. The Khan el-Khalili market hums with the voices of merchants, the scent of cinnamon and camel dung, and the slow weight of afternoon heat. Nefise walks the same path each week—from the spice stalls to the Maristan hospital, where she tends to the sick with herbs and quiet prayers. She is composed, generous, and asks questions that startle. Tariq arranges his jars of cardamom and ginger with the care of a man who has learned patience. He notices Nefise's routine before he knows her name. When she stops at his stall, something passes between them—fleeting, unnamed, but felt. Gregor works his forge near the Bab al-Bahr stables. A blacksmith with scarred hands and dreams of fire, he is known among caravan masters as a man who fights as though something older than memory guides his blade. When a physician's urgent need draws them together, the three find themselves bound by more than circumstance. Strange recognitions surface. Cats appear at way stations, watching. A locked chest travels north, its contents unknown. They return to Cairo changed—though none of them yet understand why, or what waits beneath the surface of their ordinary lives.
