The Hubris Agreement

Golanda Dondrah is a tarot card reader in the small mountain town of Campbellton. She spends her nights telling fortunes in the tavern where her husband, Dobkin, works as the bartender’s apprentice. Her unique skill in the field of tarot reading lies in her ability to decipher from the cards her clients’ future by recounting events from their past. During the first night of winter, Golanda is offered a substantial amount of coin in trade for her services, which she gladly takes. During the reading, however, the cards suggest something nefarious is at play. The man then informs Golanda of his plan to assassinate the empress, Guldi Junjaard, during her stay in Campbellton. The man identifies himself as Duron Huemfrai, The Monstered Man, a man the people have been told to be cautious of. Golanda then lunges for Duron in an attempt to murder him. She does so not by her own will, but by a deeply seeded enchantment cast upon her and all within the kingdom of Magrah. Duron dispells the enchantment with the use of his own arcane talent, but not before Golanda announces to all in attendance that Duron aims to kill the empress. Everyone inside the tavern mindlessly takes up arms against Duron, but to no avail, as he uses his arcane art of manipulating reality to dispatch his wouldbe attackers with ease - Golanda’s husband, Dobkin, included. Golanda is then forced to continue with Duron’s reading, as he has promised to spare her life upon completion. She agrees, and begins recounting the events of Duron’s life that led him here. The reading reflects Duron’s marriage, and the dismantling of the union due to a murder allegation that neither he, nor his wife El’lennorah can remember. The pair are banished from their village of Khulai. Golanda sees Duron travel to the neighboring nation of Magrah, where he comes to learn the woman he’d been accused of murdering is in fact their empress, and the mother of his child. He is then incarcerated, and held prisoner with a being made of stone and crystal known as Djamantes. Djamantes informs Duron of the empress’s plan to siphon the life of his child in order to prolong her existence. This prompts Duron to stage an escape with Djamantes in tow.  After the duo’s escape, Duron and Djamantes set out to locate a magic item Djamantes had enlightened Duron about known as the Astrolorumn - a device said to grant its wielder a means to achieve the future of their dreams. They believe that with this device, they may locate an ancient dragon by the name of Hubris, who will grant any who find him with a divine endowment. The two then set out on an epic journey to find the Astrolorumn, so they can find Hubris and rescue his daughter before falling victim to her mother’s arcane ritual.
