You Will Be Replaced

This entire story was AI generated back in 2022, some months before ChatGPT became a thing. I used EleutherAI GPT-J 6B, EleutherAI GPT-NeoX-20b and MetaAI Fairseq and HoloAI to create a custom finetune trained on my other stories (Earthbound, Plant Life, Ophiuchans and various snippets that would later become Amongst the Stars of Cygnus). I'm uploading it for historical archive purposes and do not expect anyone to read it or find it enjoyable. The recent developments of human neurons playing Doom, rat brains being used for compute, the memory shortages and everything else going on right now made me think of this story, and I decided to publish it. The AI models used are ancient and would only perform text completion. They could not not follow instructions or chat. They had only 2000 tokens context size. You'd get 64 or 128 tokens of output, no more, no less, because stop tokens weren't a thing. To generate the story, I used so called "Author's Notes" tags as a makeshift instruction and used it to make GPT-NeoX-20B produce an outline, that was then manually broken up into new Author's Notes that would produce scenes for each of the chapters one paragraph at a time. A lot of regeneration was required to get good output, and the formatting had to be done by hand as some models like Fairseq didn't even do linebreaks. However, the overhead for regenerating and selecting output and handholding meant it was less economical than writing by hand, and it took me about a week to get the AI to produce this.
