Excelsior

Daniel Carver, a scientist and inventor, is testing his new machine in his backyard workshop when a faulty capacitor causes an unexpected event. Instead of achieving his intended goal, the machine teleports his entire shed, along with Daniel inside it, onto a starship called the Excelsior, splitting it in two in the process. Daniel explores the unfamiliar vessel and stumbles onto the bridge, where he encounters the ship's crew: a race of small, large-eyed aliens called Adichis, who all share the name Steve. After the shock of Daniel's appearance causes chaos on the bridge, and Daniel faints from the stress of it all, landing on the captain in the process, he wakes up in the ship's medical bay. There he is treated by Doctor Steve and visited by Captain Steve Sarmazian, who is eager to send Daniel on his way. The captain's eagerness is revealed to stem partly from embarrassment, as Daniel's collapse had caused him to soil himself in front of the entire crew. Daniel is taken under the wing of the cheerful Second Lieutenant Steve, who feeds him, explains Adichi culture, and gets him settled into a guest room. With his shed in pieces and his machine in need of repair, Daniel faces an uncertain wait aboard the ship. As he drifts off to sleep, he grapples with the reality of his situation, unsure how he will ever find his way home.
