When his sensors ping on a stripped military-grade hoverbike half-buried in the dunes, he reads the scene, pockets an unfamiliar piece of tech, and drives on — unaware that whoever walked away from that bike has walked onto his rig. ADR13 is an engineered operative of the FARM, built for precision and patience. She has just executed her forty-third operation when something unprecedented happens: the filing comes back incomplete. She runs it again. And again. Forty-one times. The operation was perfect and the execution was wrong, and she has no vocabulary for what that means. So she runs. When Doug finally pieces it together, he doesn't reach for his weapon. He opens the cargo hatch, asks the dark a question — *running away from something, or running toward something?* — and leaves the hatch open. What follows is a conversation conducted one word at a time across a comms display, in the dark, on the road to the OASIS. It is ADR13's first act of chosen speech. By morning, she has a name: Addie. But the FARM is already looking. A scout team is on her trail.
