G. Nightwit looked up from her notes. Elias adjusted the bone lantern beside him. “That was not a metaphor.” “I was hoping we could begin with your arrival in the First Circle.” “Sure. I arrived, was immediately assaulted, measured, priced, and entered into several systems that had been waiting for anyone without legal representation.” “That sounds hostile.” “It was civic. I expected answers. I got assassins instead.” He raised his hands to stop the reporter. “Don't get me started on the assassins. I had to take out half the attempts. There just wasn't room.” The story Elias told offered portals, paperwork, assassination contracts, Arena obligations, debt mathematics, corpse markets, public statements written before the disaster happened, and a government office that seemed unusually committed to making reality worse in an organized manner. “Were you trying to become more dangerous?” Nightwit asked. “No. I was trying to become harder to invoice.” That effort proved complicated. The Arena wanted him profitable. The Crows wanted him useful. The Portal Mage Guild wanted him contained. Public Assurance wanted him explained. His friends wanted answers. His enemies wanted to erase him. And somewhere inside the First Circle’s machinery, someone had discovered that souls, panic, and infrastructure could be combined into a very expensive problem. Elias sighed. “In my defense, I only started building counter-infrastructure after the existing infrastructure tried to eat people.” Nightwit stopped writing again. “That part needs to stay,” Elias said. “I was considering softening it.” “Don’t. Softening is how politicians survive.” ------- “Like watching the Grim Reaper spin plates, tell jokes, and stamp passports to the underworld while trying to open a small business in an alien city on a distant planet.” —Mira Quill, Senior Catastrophe Correspondent, The Cosmic Times “An unsettlingly practical sequel. Lord Elias expands his legally disputed rise through Arena violence, civic fraud, soul-token procurement, public-relations horror, and the founding of what may technically qualify as a haunted commercial district.” —Professor Havel Mourn, Department of Narrative Containment Diary of a Dark Lord: Book 2 is a dark progression fantasy about an undead mage navigating the First Circle, cultivation, Arena debt, shadow magic, soul economics, institutional corruption, dangerous friendships, worse enemies, and the terrible discovery that freedom becomes more expensive after civilization gets involved. The Cosmic Times reminds readers that Lord Elias denies all accusations of deliberate villainy, reckless necromantic entrepreneurship, and intentional destabilization of public confidence. He does, however, admit the spaceship was a good investment.
