Otherworld Wizardry - The Naga's Pool

The following story takes place in Cambodia and is told in Khmer, the language of its characters. It has been rendered in English for the reader's benefit, though the rhythms of Khmer speech have been preserved as faithfully as translation allows. The respect for elders, the kinship terms, the particular way of moving between formality and warmth: all of these remain. When Chann calls his sister "P'aoun," he is using the Khmer word for younger sibling, a term that carries both affection and responsibility. When Bopha calls him "Bong," she is addressing her older brother in the only way that would feel natural to her, with the word that means both "elder sibling" and, in some unspoken way, "the one who walks ahead of me."
