When Marty saw the floating words wake him up he hoped this was the chance he was waiting for. He was not made for modern life, he was also not made for old life, he still didn't know what he was made for. The trials of the Pillar were his last chance at a life worth living. Alien life had come to earth, and it brought magic with it. You only needed to pass the trials and get an essence, if you die trying it was destiny. The implication that the magic was fertilizer did nothing to deter people from running to the pillars. Some wanted glory, others wanted power, Marty wanted meaning.
