The Space Between Them: The Cat and the Crow

A cat lives within a space that asks nothing of her. She watches, but does not follow. What happens around her continues without needing her to understand it. A crow appears at the edge of that space. It does not enter. It offers something small in exchange for something small. The cat allows it. One day, the sequence breaks. The crow does not arrive when expected. When it returns, it no longer leads the same way. The cat follows it beyond what had always contained her. She sees what had been taken. She returns, but the space does not receive her as it did before. What once held now only separates. What once continued now stays without moving. Another voice appears, one that does not offer, only observes. It places doubt where there had been no need for it. The cat remains by the window. Nothing confirms what was seen. Nothing restores what was before. The space stays. She does not leave.
