The Forgotten Continent

The Adventurer's Guild is ten years old. Aldric, its guild master, has spent those ten years behind a desk — processing applications, signing documents, managing complaints about granary walls, and watching an endless mountain from his window that nobody ever asks about. He is one of the old ones. Ancient beings of immense power, few in number, who have been keeping this world alive across more eras than anyone currently alive can remember. So are the people around him. None of the adventurers filing their reports downstairs know this. They are too busy filling out their forms incorrectly. The Forgotten Continent is a story about an institution built to protect a world that does not know it needs protecting. It is slow, it is dry, and it has genuine affection for the people running the machinery that keeps civilization from falling apart — ancient beings who are tired in the way that only things worth doing make you tired, and ordinary people who show up every day because that is what the work requires. There are ancient threats. There are eldritch horrors. There is a bureaucratic machinery of impressive sophistication. And there is a stack of paperwork that is never, under any circumstances, finished. Not even the old ones can escape from the paperwork. — ✦ — The current Royal Road version will be stubbed or a teaser since the Forgotten Continent will be joining the Kindle Select program, for the next 90 days, at a minimum, there will be no updates in here.
