She is in a relationship with Mattie, an American girl who suffers from recurring cancer. The women are depleted of resources to fight Mattie's illness, and are desperate to save her life. This is when they meet a scientist called Gemma who is researching cancer genes using DNA proteins from moon jellyfish (the Medusa). Unaware that the research is founded on illegally obtained DNA from the recently deceased, Mattie is offered the chance to participate in experimental research with the promise that it might lead to her recovery. Throughout the course of the treatments, things don't go as planned and Mattie starts to change… one day she enters the ocean and does not come back, she is feared dead. Gemma becomes anxious of losing everything. The research is jeopardised as the dubious financiers wish to monopolise it for their own select clientele. Gemma destroys the lab as a ruse to continue with the research on her family farm seeing this an opportunity to finally free herself from the financiers and escalate her research without restrictions. When what appears to be remains of Mattie’s skin washes up on the beach, Gemma takes it to her lab to continue her research there. Secrets are revealed and the research takes a turn that no one ever expected, resulting in murder and metamorphosis.
