The story is set in a harsh, post-apocalyptic reality ravaged by Horror infestations, dimensional [Fractures], and the lingering effects of a nuclear winter. Arable land is scarce, and humanity has retreated into the Human Unified Territory. ​Society is governed by the [System]—a digital-metaphysical interface that most humans use to manage their power, clothes (magitech), and daily lives. At the center of this world is the UCA, an elite institution for Story Bearers, those capable of wielding narrative power to fight the Horrors.
