In 1979, private detective Jack arrives in the mist-covered state of Sakaloka to find Hannah Kontz, the missing granddaughter of a powerful woman. A ransom was paid, but the exchange failed, the money vanished, and several people involved are now dead. In the decaying Starlake City, Jack and a tough local kid named Sam uncover a web of kidnappers, criminals, and a failed ransom exchange that leads into abandoned mines and multiple murders. As people begin sleepwalking into the misty sea after shared dreams, Jack realizes the case is tied not just to crime, but to the city, the mist, and something older watching from the dark.
