The Unwritten

The Church of the Unwritten Word does not kill what it fears. It erases it — names, houses, bloodlines, removed from every record as though they never drew breath. The Dominion calls this mercy, It has called many things mercy.
Cael Mourne is a name that does not exist. A boy who, by every official ledger, died seven years ago while his family was quietly unmade around him. He did not die. He learned something more useful instead.
In a world held together by Inscription — where reality bends to will and cost and marks etched in the right places, the Church decides what is possible. More carefully, it decides what is believed to be impossible. These have never been the same list. His father knew this and for that he too was erased.
Now Cael moves through borrowed names and cold archive rooms, through the houses of men who sleep well despite what they've done, building toward something the Church has no word for. Not vengeance. Something quieter than that. Something that doesn't need a name yet.
Everyone around him is keeping their own count. No one is what they appear to be. No one is a fool.
