The worst dragon. The worst rider. The worst prophecy. Somehow, winning. Rory Chen’s bloodline is pure gold. Her mother is a war hero. Her father is a diplomat. Legacy admission to Aurelion Academy—the world’s premier dragon rider school—was supposed to be her birthright. One problem: Rory is fatally allergic to dragons. Hives, sneezing, anaphylaxis. She discovered this mid–entrance exam when her assigned dragon sneezed back (fire + mucus = explosive disaster) and they crashed into the Chancellor’s tower. She should be expelled. Instead, the System—the ancient magic that governs dragon bonds—glitches. It assigns her to Detention Wing: the rejects, the unbondable, the dragons no one wanted and the riders no one trained. Her dragon: Barnaby, a Common Wretch Drake—flightless, asthmatic, obsessed with taxidermy. He stuffs his kills. Poorly. His lair is a museum of horrors. Her classmates: A necromancer who keeps accidentally resurrecting his dragon’s shed skin. A siren whose song only works on fish (and, she recently discovered, blood). A knight genuinely from 1,000 years ago who does not understand modernity and challenges vending machines to combat. The System:[BOND ESTABLISHED: Rory Chen + Barnaby the Wretch][COMPATIBILITY: 3%][RECOMMENDATION: Euthanasia (dragon) or Transfer (rider)][OVERRIDE: Detention Protocol. Good luck.][ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: Worst Match in 400 Years] Now the System expects Detention Wing to compete in the Trials. The other houses want them dead or disgraced. And there’s a prophecy—because there’s always a prophecy—about a rider from Detention stealing the Crown of Flames and reshaping the world. Rory just wants to survive her allergy shots, keep Barnaby from stuffing her socks, and maybe kiss that cute pyromancer from Ignis House without sneezing herself unconscious.
