A Tune in the Key of the Beast is a dark post-apocalyptic horror story about survival, faith, trauma, and resisting spiritual corruption in a world overtaken by madness. The story follows Zach Muramoto, a hardened but emotionally scarred survivor, and Reverend Jean Pierre Seromba, an African priest with a brutal past as a child soldier, as they travel into rural Arkansas to investigate a church tied to one of the reverend’s former friends. The world they move through has been transformed by the “song of the beast,” a supernatural force that invades minds, erodes sanity, and draws people into cultic devotion, violence, and monstrous transformation. During the journey, Seromba explains his philosophy of survival: in this new world, innocence alone is not enough, and neither is faith by itself. Those most likely to endure are either the truly simple-hearted or those who have already stared into horror and somehow survived. He reveals pieces of his own past in wartime Africa, showing that he understands evil not as abstraction but as lived experience. Zach, who carries deep wounds from childhood abuse and neglect, begins to realize that his own darkness may be part of why he has survived so long. When they arrive at the isolated church, the mission becomes a confrontation not just with external evil, but with Zach’s buried trauma. Inside, the supernatural force preys on his memories, trapping him in a nightmare version of his abusive foster home and nearly pulling him fully into madness. The church’s congregation has fused into a grotesque, demonic mass under the influence of a being the reverend identifies as Legion. Reverend Seromba leads Zach through the terror with prayer, force of will, and hard-won spiritual conviction, ultimately banishing the abomination and granting mercy to the dying. In the aftermath, the story reveals its deeper purpose: Seromba did not bring Zach there only to fight a monster, but to force him to confront the horrors within himself before those wounds could be used against him again. The reverend believes Zach has a role to play in saving others in this broken world, and that survival will require both faith and the ability to face evil without surrendering to it. The story ends on a grim but hopeful note. After burying the dead, Zach and the reverend continue their mission, carrying forward the belief that even in a world ruled by corruption and despair, mercy, purpose, and resistance still matter.
