Drue’s no hero—just a shopkeep, randomly and abruptly chosen by the gods to serve as their champion in an endless war against The Evil King. Armed with divine gifts, the gods’ belligerent instruction, and his trusty companion—Chester the Rooster—Drue sets out to fulfill his destiny… only to be utterly crushed in his very first battle. Faced with death, he surrenders. And survives. In captivity, Drue expects cruelty. Instead, he finds something far more dangerous: truth. The Evil King is no mad tyrant, but a man shaped—and broken—by the gods themselves. Through the King’s teachings, Drue begins to see the divine not as benevolent creators, but as manipulative, arrogant beings who toy with mortal lives for sport and control. As his understanding deepens, Drue becomes something far more dangerous than a failed champion. He becomes a Unbound... a Heretic to those that still follow the gods... The gods do not tolerate failure. When Drue fell, they turned their gaze elsewhere—already searching for their next champions, certain he was dead… or worse, irrelevant. But Drue is alive... learning... growing stronger... all under the tutelage of The Evil King So the question is not what the gods will do when they find him again— but what will happen when they realize their discarded champion is no longer theirs to control. Killing a king is treason. But killing a god… is Deicide.
