In a small world, the cyclical conflict between the Hero and the Demon King is a reoccurring ritual necessary for its periodic renewal, one ordained by the gods themselves and never erring for millennia. Until now, that is. Due to being the wrong man at the wrong place at the wrong time, Harlan Denholm, a middling Freelancer, ends up getting dragged into the Cycles in place of the reluctant Hero of the era. Never one to turn down an opportunity, he sets out to fulfill his delusions of grandeur, with the Demon King serving as his distant chronicler and occasional advisor on the journey to capture and reform the great villains of the age, just to prove to everyone (and himself) that he can. Of course, such grand plans rarely survive contact with reality...
