The Coal Girl Who Outlived the Stars is a historical science‑fiction novel that begins in the coal‑scarred mountains of late‑1800s Welch, West Virginia, and stretches across a century of human history without aging its heroine a single day.  Twelve‑year‑old Eliza Mae Calder is an orphan in every sense that matters. Her mother died bringing her into the world, and her father—a coal miner—succumbed slowly to black lung disease, leaving Eliza alone in a town that has little mercy for children without kin. To survive, she scavenges abandoned mines for loose coal, selling what she can on the street corners of Welch. The mountains are both her refuge and her threat, offering shelter, danger, and an uneasy sense of belonging.  One evening, while climbing higher than she ever has before, Eliza slips from a cliffside path and should die. Instead, she is saved by beings not of this world—aliens who have quietly observed Earth and intervened at a single, pivotal moment. They take Eliza with them, healing her body and halting her aging, allowing her to live among them beyond the limits of human time.  Over what feels like years—but spans a century on Earth—Eliza explores distant worlds, alien philosophies, and civilizations that rise and fall faster than human lives. She watches Earth change from afar, witnessing wars, machines, and the slow unraveling of the coal towns she once knew. Immortality becomes both a gift and a burden as everyone she ever loved fades into history.  After one hundred years, Eliza chooses to return to Earth, unchanged in body but transformed in spirit. Welch is no longer the town she knew, yet the mountains remain. As rumors swirl about the girl who does not age, Eliza must decide how to live in a world that has forgotten her—and whether a person bound outside of time can still belong anywhere at all.
