Cee, a restless farm girl from a struggling oasis, watches the sky with longing, yearning for the corporate cities—massive flying behemoths gliding across the heavens, promising a life of comfort and security. For her, the sand offers only hardship, and she’ll do anything to escape it. Meanwhile, Frytir, a boy born into the rigid hierarchy of one such floating city, feels trapped by expectations. The surface below, forbidden and treacherous, calls to him like a whisper of freedom he’s never known. When the foundations for their lives are torn out from under them, one by force, the other by choice, they find themselves on board a pirate ship, enthralled in a plot to send the corporate cities crashing to the ground. Cee and Frytir must grapple with their grief, addiction, and mistrust if they want to survive in the new, dangerous world in which they find themselves. All while dealing with specters from their pasts, both literal and metaphorical.
