Kai Vasren is fourteen years old and dying. Her human body cannot withstand the divine power she was born with, and it is slowly destroying her. As her condition worsens and time narrows, she asks her father to let her attend Edenvale, an elite academy for powerful magical beings, determined to claim what life she has left. At Edenvale, Kai enters the world for the first time. She makes friends and navigates unfamiliar social and hierarchical structures, and begins to see that shared beliefs do not produce shared ways of living. But as her power begins to surface in ways that cannot be concealed, she becomes increasingly difficult to place within a system that was never built to account for her. Kai finds that what began as a final attempt to live fully begins to carry consequences beyond her control. As attention gathers around her, she is forced to confront not only the limits of her failing body, but the truth of what she is—and whether she will survive long enough to understand it.
