In the 22nd century, the small island nation of Maharlika split apart after more than a century of civil war. Using amphibious war machines called Wafters, East Maharlika began a massive military campaign to reunite the island, expel all unwelcome foreign influence, and end the local rebellion. The longer the fighting lasted, the more innocents were caught in the crossfire.   The people of Adelia were all too familiar with the tragedies of warfare. Caught in more than a century of fighting between East and West Maharlika, Adelia welcomed all those who fled the war as refugees. Yet, not a single country has recognized the small nation. East Maharlika dismissed Adelia as a false state concocted by the rebellion, and most of the world followed suit.
