Drei is a half-elf raised by orcs — which mostly means he's the scrawniest thing in a tribe of eight-foot warriors, and his mother still thinks the problem is that he doesn't eat enough. What he has instead of muscle is a talent for runes, fifteen years of his brother's spear drills, and an inherited scrap of chaos that empowers his active skills by devouring their levels. When a mana storm tears open portals to uncharted realms, his unruly sister drags him out to explore. She fights, and he sniffs out juicy treasure with his mana sight. It works until he pokes a rune he shouldn't have and burns half his skill levels escaping through an unstable portal. Alone and half-dead, Drei is stranded worlds from home, his only way back held together by runes he painted in his own blood. In search of materials to repair it, he instead finds humans — the side of his family tree he's never met. Now, all he needs is finesse he doesn't have, a bargain with a woman who wants out of her clan, and friends he didn't plan on. Turns out the beasts were the easy part.
