The Storm Within

The Storm Within

Winter is a white-haired neko traveling alone through the edge towns of Veri'to's magical forest — rare enough in her coloring that she has learned to move fast and keep her head down. When two men corner her in a tavern, she is rescued by a stranger named Soul Arielgon, whose black armor triggers an inexplicable recognition in her, something she connects instinctively to the Ve'run Mountains of her hometown and the dark ore her mother used to touch in secret without ever explaining why. Soul exposes the men as impostors, and by the following morning the real Sword Hero Trivne' and Staff Hero Velt'rem have arrived. With a confrontation drawing dangerous attention from a duke's son, Soul opens a transportation circle to move the group to safety — but it is intercepted by his brother, who pulls Winter out specifically and deposits her alone in an abandoned castle. Using her exceptional spatial memory Winter maps the castle's deliberately disorienting layout, overhears voices behind a crimson-lit door including a lord who says he knows exactly where she is, and receives a warning from Soul appearing as a shadow-figure. He directs her to a hidden dagger made from the same ancient black material as his armor, which settles into her hand with the same recognition she felt in the tavern. When the lord's blind warrior finds her anyway, she fights him through the castle using her mental map as a weapon. When he forms a blood-sword in the shape of the blade that killed her parents, lightning rises through her without being called, the dagger glows with rose and storm patterns, and she destroys him. She follows the outer corridor to a storm-carved door the dagger opens, steps through, and falls thousands of feet above a violent ocean. Wind guides her fall to a distant island. She wakes on the beach and slips into a half-dream — a childhood memory of hiding in the hedge at her village home, watching Soul arrive during a visit from the Seven Heroes. He wears a necklace matching her mother's, speaks her mother's name Diana Dea with easy familiarity, sends the Heroes away, and looks directly at Winter's hiding spot before turning back and saying: keep Winter safe from them. It's not her time to find out who she is. She wakes to find a young man named Cael beside her. Together they kill a three-headed sea serpent and he leads her to a village that stops her at the tree line — it is her village, not in resemblance but precisely, every angle and hedge and hill exactly as she grew up with them. At its center stands a statue of Soul built with the care reserved for heroes and rulers, and above the village his castle watches from the hill, constructed entirely from the same black stone as his armor and her dagger. The village elders receive her. They tell her the castle's two names — The Watcher and The Tower — and that its stone is called umbral stone, found naturally in only a few places in the world, one of them the Ve'run range of her homeland. They tell her the shadow guardian held the demon king back from the valley during the War of Races and that when he fought it didn't look like a battle — it looked like a conclusion. Then the neko elder Mara tells her that when she was young, a white-haired neko girl visited the village for years, climbed to the castle regularly, wore a necklace of the same dark material, and one season simply stopped coming. Her name, Mara says at the door as she leaves, was Diana. Winter sits alone connecting what she has always known to what she is only now being allowed to see. Her mother knew Soul, knew the castle, knew the stone — and kept all of it from her. Elder Sove has promised answers in the morning about what umbral stone is and who it responds to. For the first time, Winter is the one deciding what happens next. She is going to find out.
