Retirement Blues: A Mech Pilots Attempt To Be Normal, A Lancer Story

Hugh Crowe spent twenty-three years piloting mechanized frames for the Union Armed Forces, fighting wars on the far edges of known space. He survived campaigns that erased entire cities from the maps of the Orion Arm. He fought in places where physics behaved like a suggestion rather than a law, where blinkspace anomalies warped sensor feeds and reality itself occasionally disagreed with the assumptions of the human brain. When the war finally ended, Hugh came home with a decorated service record, a body rebuilt from flash-cloned organs and cybernetics, and an NHP partner who technically should have been reassigned the moment he retired. Now forty-two—subjectively—and newly retired, Hugh is attempting to live a quiet civilian life on the ocean world of Biatune. It isn’t going well. Civilian time moves differently. Conversations stall in places where a crude barracks joke or a tactical assessment used to go. People treat him like a monument, or a cautionary tale, depending on how much they know about the conflicts the Union fights beyond the Core. His therapist insists integration takes patience. Hugh insists patience rarely solved problems in a cockpit. The one constant in his life is Rakta, an LUCIFER-pattern Non-Human Person housed in a military-grade casket that now occupies an entire room of Hugh’s apartment. Rakta is brilliant, analytical, endlessly curious—and, according to Hugh, an unrepentant pain in the ass. While Hugh struggles to build a life that doesn’t revolve around the next deployment, Rakta studies his behavior like a malfunctioning system component and pushes him toward “corrective measures” with the subtlety of a high-explosive breaching charge. The recommendation that finally sticks is simple: Find a hobby.
