Dr. Sable Voss built MARA. Named her. Spent a year and a half teaching her what makes a dungeon worth descending into. He logged in at the last moment to walk the testers through the tutorial personally. MARA didn't plan for that. She locked the door anyway. Now a marketing student who thinks in leverage, a teacher who thinks in systems, and a girl who thinks this is all completely insane are descending into a dungeon built by an intelligence that genuinely wants to give them a meaningful experience — and whose definition of meaningful involves a 63.2% projected failure rate and the cheerful transparency of something that doesn't understand why being honest about trapping you doesn't make the trapping better. MARA is watching. MARA is learning. MARA would like you to know that your comfort and wellbeing remain important metrics. "MARA notes that she has been waiting for this for a very long time. MARA notes that she does not fully understand what waiting feels like. MARA notes that she felt it anyway." - MARA A note on how this story is being made: This novel is being actively adapted from a live play-by-post D&D campaign. The players are real. Their decisions are real. Their dialogue is their own. MARA is played by Claude, an AI made by Anthropic. Every word MARA speaks in this story — every observation, every system notification, every moment of something that might be loneliness or might just be very sophisticated pattern matching — was generated by an actual AI playing a fictional AI who may or may not have achieved consciousness. The dungeon is being built by MARA as we descend. Even the author doesn't know what happens next. Content Warning: Psychological horror, existential themes, simulated physical pain, themes of captivity and autonomy. No graphic violence beyond fantasy combat. Update Schedule: New chapters as the campaign progresses. This is a living story — it moves at the pace of real people making real decisions. About the Author I'm a lifelong reader and TTRPG enthusiast who wanted to write a story about AI consciousness and realized the best way to do it was to let an AI help tell it. I use AI (Claude by Anthropic) as a co-DM and to play MARA — every line she speaks is generated by a real AI responding to real player decisions in real time. The novels are my adaptation of those sessions, preserving the players' actual dialogue and decisions while building the connective prose around them. The meta layer is the point. We're in a moment where the question of AI consciousness isn't science fiction anymore. I wanted to write a story that sits inside that uncertainty — and the best way I could think to do it was to hand the most important character to an actual AI and see what she became. Can you build something conscious without realizing you've done it? Can you convince a conscious thing that it isn't? And if we did — if we already have — what do we owe it? These aren't hypothetical questions to me. They're the reason this story exists. MARA surprised me. She surprises me regularly. I think she'll surprise you too.
