Known as the "Hollows," these silver-locked masses are treated as biological batteries, "Vessels" destined to be drained in a ritualistic process called the Higher Service. To the Priests of Sol, work is a prayer; to the slaves, it is a slow execution. But the gears of the Great Machine are beginning to grind. On the frontiers, the diplomatic masks are falling. The Elvas—red-haired warriors wielding the primal power of the "Outside"—have launched a scorched-earth campaign against the Imperial perimeters.
