TO DIE & LIVE

TO DIE & LIVE

Walt Kirby thought his story ended with death. But in To Die and Live, death is merely the beginning of an absurd, darkly comedic adventure. Sentenced to Hell for his criminal yet oddly principled life, Walt discovers that the underworld is not the fiery pit of torment he imagined. Instead, it's a grim parody of the worst aspects of modern life—a city choked by traffic jams, soul-crushing work shifts, suffocating bureaucracy, and a Learning Channel that no one can escape. Demons aren't the monsters of folklore—they're overworked clerks, beleaguered cashiers, and disillusioned office workers. In this bizarre afterlife, Walt quickly befriends Louie, the Devil himself—a smooth-talking, world-weary leader who likes Walt’s charm. Given Louie’s right-hand man's role, Walt oversees Hell’s daily operations, from dishing out ironic punishments to managing the infernal grind. But what starts as a novel escape from the monotony of life soon becomes just as tedious. The allure fades, and Walt longs for something more—perhaps even for the life he left behind. Walt’s chance at redemption comes when Gregory Cornell, a desperate man, strikes a deal with the Devil. In exchange for returning to Earth, Walt must free Cornell’s family from the clutches of a cult led by Turner Penmark, a ruthless con man who has twisted them into fanatical zealots. On Earth, Walt reunites with his cousin Emma, his only ally in a world that moved on without him. But as Walt struggles to liberate the family, he must confront Penmark’s sinister grip and his own conflicted desires. Does he genuinely want to save these people—or is he just looking for a way to escape his damnation? To Die and Live is a tale where moral boundaries blur, blending action, dark humour, and existential questions in a surreal setting where the line between life and death is thin and redemption is a matter of perspective. As Walt navigates a world where ethics are never black and white, he must decide whether helping others can genuinely redeem a damned soul—or whether Hell, in all its mundane horror, is where he belongs. With stakes that span both worlds, Walt embarks on a journey that is equally tragic, absurd, and thrilling—leading to a conclusion that challenges the notion of salvation. To Die and Live offers readers a fresh take on the afterlife. Humour, tragedy, and philosophical musings intertwine in a narrative that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.
