Book I: Strong Bones Chapter One: The Road That Forgot Itself — Synopsis Mallory Locklear drives deep into an isolated forest to claim an unexpected inheritance from a relative no one in her family acknowledges. Her mother’s chilling warning—“Locklear blood doesn’t wander there”—lingers as her phone loses service and the road disappears from her GPS, though it remains physically beneath her tires. The deeper she goes, the more the forest seems to close in, as if the land itself is reconsidering her presence. Mallory is not easily shaken—she manages fear by naming it—but she is unusually sensitive to atmospheres. Spaces press against her. Old buildings make her ill. And as she approaches the estate, she senses something distinctly aware of her arrival. The mansion appears without transition, standing tall in a clearing that feels carved from the woods rather than grown. Its structure is solid, deliberate—its bones strong. The soil surrounding it appears darker, bruised. The air carries a faint metallic edge. Inside, the house feels warm but not welcoming—occupied. The door opens before she touches it. Something brushes her wrist. Sounds echo from deeper within: soft clicks, measured scrapes, three deliberate knocks behind a closed upstairs door. Portraits line the walls, all turned inward. Shadows gather into shapes that vanish when directly observed. The space feels reactive, as though it is studying her in return. When her phone suddenly regains service and her friend Calathea calls, the interruption breaks the mounting tension. But as soon as the call ends, the signal disappears again—leaving Mallory alone with the house’s suffocating stillness. Despite the growing unease, she chooses practicality over panic, opening the door to let in fresh air and unloading her belongings. The mansion remains unchanged—steady in its unnatural warmth. Not abandoned. Paused. The chapter closes with a faint thud from upstairs—an invitation or a warning. Mallory decides not to investigate. What Mallory will soon learn is, she can travel between her past, present and future within this dwelling. She just has no idea what her role really entails...
