"They assume the lane resolves. Until it doesn't."
For four hundred years, the Veth'ara Gauntlet has decided which newly contacted species are ready to enter the Galactic Consul and which will be left behind.
Four species have attempted it before humanity. Some, like the Dresh'kai, have spent centuries living with the consequences. The last species to attempt the trial lasted three days.
When humanity's turn arrives, the Veth'ara expect a battle.
Instead, they meet a delegation that treats first contact like a technical audit.
What follows is later filed as the Section 4 incident: a tactical assessment turned procedural ambush, built from pressure mapping, institutional blind spots, and one carefully chosen loophole.
The Consul believes the contest ends when the buzzer sounds.
The Veth'ara know better.
The test was never the point. What humanity wanted was the system behind it.
And beyond the arena, analysts, diplomats, soldiers, insurgents, and forgotten species begin to discover that the Consul's greatest weakness is not that it cannot see the truth.
It is that it sees exactly what it was built to see.
