Threshold: The First Notification (Book 1)

Threshold: The First Notification (Book 1)

At midnight on an ordinary Tuesday, the universe sent a notification. Not to governments. Not to scientists. To everyone — every human, every vampire who had spent centuries pretending to be human, every werewolf in a forest that had just been flagged as a High-Value Zone, every creature that had survived by being unknown to every system that had ever tried to classify it. The notification said: we have been reading this world for a very long time. We know what you are. We are ready to tell you. The System doesn't grant power. It finds what was already there. It looks at a vampire who has spent two hundred and eighty-seven years building invisible architecture — courts, alliances, the delicate structures that kept three rival factions from destroying each other — and tells him his ceiling is conditional and scales with depth of construction. It looks at a civil engineer sitting on a foundation he laid alone by hand at five in the morning and tells him: the land already knew you. The words your father taught you were not ceremonial. They were architectural. It looks at a man whose life was destroyed nine years ago by someone with Ajogun connections, reads his Chi, and assigns him Gold Tier — the potential that was always there, underneath the suppression — and then opens a Reckoning Track with a voice that sounds, unmistakably, like something that looked at what was done to him and decided that was not acceptable. It looks at a river dolphin who has been performing humanity for sixty years and tells him he is operating at 11.3% of his actual capacity. The remaining 88.7% requires one thing. The System cannot be charmed. Threshold is about what happens when the thing that has always been true about you gets named by something that cannot lie. Some people find that unbearable. Some find it, underneath everything, the first honest thing that has ever happened to them.
