Novel Synopsis — Ashes of Faschnat  Set in the late 1870s, only a few years after the founding of the isolated Swiss‑immigrant village of Helvetia, West Virginia, the novel follows Anna Keller, a young widow struggling to raise her seven‑year‑old twins, Lukas and Lena, in a land both beautiful and unforgiving. The tight‑knit settlement clings fiercely to its Old World traditions, none more beloved—or more necessary—than the annual Faschnat festival, a night of masks, fire, bells, and ceremony meant to drive out winter’s lingering darkness.  But this winter is different.  As the community prepares for Faschnat, whispers spread of strange behaviors in the forest: unnatural tracks, distant cries, and a sick villager who wanders at night despite being bedridden by day. Elder Dietrich, one of the founding settlers, senses something wrong in the valley—something older than their traditions, watching from the snow‑laden pines.  The first warning arrives during the Faschnat night rituals. At the moment the bonfire is blessed, Hans Adler, a man recently struck with fever, appears at the edge of the circle—silent, pale, eyes glassy. He collapses near the fire, unaffected by its heat, staring at the flames as if drawn to them. When he is carried away, the village erupts into fear. Before dawn, he dies… and then something that looks like him forces its way out of the infirmary.  Now Helvetia is no longer facing winter alone.  As villagers fall ill with a strange coldness and hunger, the dead begin to rise with unnatural resilience, drawn by sound and warmth. Uninfected families barricade their homes, torn between belief in tradition and the dawning realization that their rituals were never meant for this kind of darkness. The valley’s isolation turns quickly from protection to prison.  Anna, driven by fierce maternal instinct, must protect Lena’s keen intuition and Lukas’s practical cleverness as the outbreak consumes the village. Elder Dietrich becomes an uneasy ally, clinging to fading wisdom from their homeland while confronting a horror no superstition anticipated. Together, they uncover hints that the infection may not be new—that something buried in the valley’s past has awakened, hungry and restless in the cold.  As the survivors attempt to flee into the mountains, the burning ruins of the Faschnat bonfire become both a symbol of their last hope and a terrifying reminder that fire alone cannot cleanse what now walks the woods.  The valley of Helvetia has survived harsh winters before.  But this winter has teeth.
