Han and the Moon Mote

In a mountain village devoted to the moon spirit Selene, the dead are honored through Moon Motes—crystal tears that carry souls skyward—yet Han’s mother, a brilliant but stubborn outsider healer, never fully finds acceptance in life or in death. When she dies after years of estrangement from her son, her spirit is captured in a mote and placed on the village’s sacred well, but a week later Han discovers that every mote has been taken to Selene’s realm except hers. Crushed by guilt and shame over abandoning her in life and failing to stand for her in death, Han resolves to defy fate, taking up his armor and sword to climb the jagged spire that looms over the village and deliver her soul to Selene himself. Battling a storm and a spectral embodiment of apathy that cracks the mote, Han is flooded with his mother’s memories of abuse, pain, resilience, and unspoken love—understanding at last the wounds that made her harsh and the depth of the bond they both let wither. Strengthened by this revelation, he defeats the spirit and reaches the summit, where Selene manifests and reveals she only forsook the mote because Han had forsaken it. Han confesses his failures and declares his enduring love, and moved by his sacrifice, Selene accepts his mother’s mote, lifting it into her realm so that, at last, she will not be alone and Han can find bittersweet redemption.
