The magic of the planet Aea renews through the magical event called the Choice.  The Choice is made by a single mage born to the task, the Phoenix. No one knows when the Choice will arrive, or how it even functions. All anyone knows…is that the Choice is between good and evil. — Healer-student Ihllaea witnessed her mother’s violent death as a small child.  Then unwise choices landed her in servitude to a death-mage for years.  So Ihllaea’s never considered other reasons—beyond the obvious—for why her family protects her so fiercely.  Daeg—High King and soulmate to Ihllaea’s cousin—looks at Ihllaea like another daughter…without knowing why.  He knows Ihllaea is the Phoenix, but he doesn’t know there’s a reason he’s so overprotective.  And then a Rogue mage bursts into Lore Keep; dying, magically broken, and insane.  Lirrin’s arrival upends everything, from fueling Ihllaea’s father’s pain-filled fury, to inciting fear and paranoia, to resurrecting the past around the family that leads Lore Keep.  The Choice is coming.  Few know what it truly is, when it will happen, or most importantly…who the Phoenix is.  Not even Ihllaea.
