THE LIVING PROTOCOL

THE LIVING PROTOCOL

by BINEESHTHOMAS

Sci-fi

2048. Humanity has everything—and nothing left to live for. Artificial intelligence has solved scarcity, eliminated labor, and optimized every human decision. There's just one problem: people are dying inside. Youth suicide rates have quadrupled. Birth rates have collapsed to 0.3 per woman. "Purpose sickness" is now a clinical diagnosis. Like the mice in John Calhoun's Universe 25 experiment, humans are discovering that paradise without meaning is just another kind of extinction. Maya Chen, a former AI ethicist, watches her fifteen-year-old son receive his algorithmic life prescription—a future completely predicted and optimized. That night, she finds him on the roof, asking why he should bother living a life the algorithm has already solved. She shows him something forbidden: footage from Solvang, the world's first Living Protocol territory. A place where algorithms are banned, where humans must work with their hands, where struggle creates meaning and consequence builds character. Where children actually want to wake up in the morning. Together, they win two slots in the immigration lottery. At the gate, they burn their devices, surrender their algorithmic safety nets, and step into a world that demands more from them—and gives back everything that matters. But the Protocol isn't utopia. People die from illnesses algorithms could have predicted. Conflicts erupt without AI mediators. Marriages tested by real consequence either strengthen or shatter. And a new generation—born into analog comfort—begins to mirror Calhoun's "beautiful ones": withdrawn, purposeless, refusing to engage with life. As more Living Protocol nations emerge across the globe—from New Zealand to Egypt to the Pacific Northwest—humanity faces an existential choice: surrender to algorithmic abundance and fade into extinction, or embrace the beautiful struggle of being human. Maya must navigate love without optimization, work without algorithmic guidance, and community without digital safety nets. Her son Kiran discovers what it means to fail, to bleed, to build something with his own hands. Together with farmers, craftsmen, builders, and dreamers, they attempt to answer the question that will determine humanity's future: Can we survive having everything we need but nothing to strive for? The Living Protocol is a novel about what happens when comfort becomes the enemy of meaning. About choosing struggle over optimization. About building a world where human beings aren't obsolete—they're essential. It's Walden meets The Dispossessed. It's solarpunk with calluses. It's a blueprint disguised as a story. This isn't a warning about the future. It's an invitation to build a different one.
